Imprisoned Iranian student activist Majid Tavakoli has been awarded today, UN’s International Day of Peace, the Student Peace Prize of 2013. The Prize is awarded biennially, on behalf of all Norwegian students, to a student or a student organization that has made a significant contribution to creating peace and promoting human rights.
The prize committee wishes to acknowledge Tavakoli for his non- violent fight for freedom of speech and democracy. “The Student Peace Price is this year awarded to a young and brave person,” commented the Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jonas Gahr Støre.
Majid Tavakoli was arrested in December 2009 after criticizing Iran’s leader Ali Khamenei in a student gathering. He has been sentenced to eight and a half years in prison.
